A memoir by Ryan Montacute
The Life
Portfolio
A Memoir of Money, Ambition,
Collapse, and Recovery
Money changed his life.
Ambition nearly destroyed it.
Recovery changed everything.
A life beyond the balance sheet.
01 / The book
He built a
financial cushion.
Then he fell.
Ryan spent years trying to buy himself more freedom. He thought financial security would finally make life feel safe.
He worked relentlessly while raising a family. He entered cryptocurrency early, lived through extraordinary gains and costly mistakes, and moved money into property and dividend investments. Slowly, the security he had wanted began to take shape.
But he kept working. Years of ambition, stress, and anxiety culminated in severe depression, psychiatric hospitalization, and a long recovery.
The Life Portfolio follows what happened before and after that collapse: the pursuit of money, the strain of keeping everything going, and the discovery that financial freedom was only part of the life he wanted.
A memoir about money and the rest of life.
The threads of a life
What we build.
What it costs.
- Money
- The promise of security, and the limits of what it can offer.
- Ambition
- The habit of pushing harder, even after the reasons have changed.
- Collapse
- When the person who manages everything can no longer keep going.
- Recovery
- The slow, uncertain work of finding a way back to ordinary life.
- Enough
- A question that money alone could never settle.
I understood compound interest in money long before I understood compound interest in stress.

02 / A different kind of wealth
The rest of
the portfolio.
He knew the risk of putting everything into one investment. It took longer to see the same risk in his own life.
Too much of Ryan’s identity rested on work, money, achievement, and being the person who could handle things. When that sense of competence fell away, financial security could not replace it.
The idea of a life portfolio grew out of recovery. Money still mattered. So did time, health, relationships, and a sense of purpose: parts of life he had too often treated as things that could wait.
